Items Needed To Put on A Roof

Certainly you’ve decided to put on a new roof, but you don’t know where to start. Or maybe you watched a video on YouTube and now think you can install your own roof.

trusses

Accordingly these support the weight of your home’s structure, so they need to be strong enough to hold up whatever you decide to put on top of that frame–whether it’s shingles or asphalt tiles.

Rafters

Further rafters are the horizontal beams that support a roof. Made of wood or metal, and they connect to trusses to support the shingles.  2x4s or 2x6s depending on how much weight you want them to hold.

felt

Specifically roofing felt a material that protects your home from leaks. Made from asphalt or fiberglass, and it’s installed on top of the roof deck to keep water out.

Underlayment

Underlayment material is installed under shingles. Provides moisture protection, insulation, and helps prevent ice damming.

Surprisingly installed before or after shingles are installed–it’s not recommended to install both at once because it will likely lead to leaks.

Ice/water shield

Equally at the same time waterproof barrier that prevents water from penetrating the roof deck. Installed under the shingles, over the underlayment and may be made of felt, paper or plastic.

Shingles

Especially made of asphalt and come in a variety of colors and styles. Rated by the number of years they will last, ranging from 30 to 50 years for high-quality ones.

Starter course

Generally the first layer of shingles that are laid over the roof deck. Since it helps protect the roof deck and prevent ice dams, which are caused by water freezing in pockets between your roof and eaves. Ice dams can also cause water damage to exterior walls if they’re not treated quickly enough.

Ridge cap

Further the ridge cap is the topmost shingle on your roof. Made of metal or wood, and it protects the rest of your shingles from wind and rain. Well-installed ridge cap can also help prevent leaks by keeping out moisture that might get between your shingles.

Nails and staples

Overall used to secure the roofing materials. Secure shingles, underlayment, ice/water shield and other components of your roof. You can purchase them at home improvement stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot.
